Overseas Patent or US only or both?

Overseas Patent or US only or both?
« on: January 27, 2019, 03:25:42 PM »
I am exploring a product that is developed outside of US. However I am planning on enhancing the product before selling it in the US market. The product is currently sold as is by other companies however my enhancement makes it unique and patent worthy.
My options 1.) Add the enhancement overseas and import here 2.) Import product, enhance in US and sell in US.

Is it better for me to obtain a patent within the country where it is being manufactured or here in the US? Does the patenting affect which option I select from above?

A US patent would let you stop other people from importing or making or selling the product in the US.   So a patent lets you stop others (it does not give you rights to do something).

Without really researching this further I would think you should choose whatever option makes the most business sense for your product and only file a patent in countries or areas where you think other people may try to sell and compete with you.
