Block Puzzle: Design or Utility

Block Puzzle: Design or Utility
« on: May 05, 2018, 04:04:18 AM »
Hi! I have been reading what is a design and what is a utility patent and can't seem to figure where my invention falls under.  I have invented a block puzzle piece, as far as I can tell, that is different looking in shape than what I have seen through my searches.  The heart of my invention is that when I take four of the invented pieces, all shaped exactly alike, I am able to connect them to form into different configuration.  They can form into simple looking shapes such as a cube, a block, a cross, and others.  The idea is how many shapes can you form by just using four of the invented pieces.  Thanks for your help in advance!

Do your blocks have any special patterns or marks on them?  If so I would lean towards a "design" patent.

I think you would have a hard time filing this as a "utility" patent because the idea of using blocks to build different shaped items is already known so there does not seem to be anything new or patentable about the functionality of your idea which again leads towards a "design" type patent.
