Hi Bren,

I assume you are asking about the "provisional patent application"?   If so, the only required costs is the patent office fee which will either be $65 or $130 for most people.   If you can spare a bit more money, I also suggest people get good patent drawings made which can cost anywhere from $20 to $80 per drawing for most inventions.

I wrote a post on this topic here:

According to the recent updates in  (USPTO), the average cost of preparing a utility patent application are 8,548.00 for preparation and filing of an original application of minimal complexity by a small patent firm (10 page specification, 10 claims),  $15,398.00 for relatively complex biotechnology/chemical cases, $11,482.00 for relatively complex mechanical cases and $13,684 for relatively complex electrical/computer cases.

The average Attorney fees for filing an amendment are as follows:

  • Minimal complexity = $2,244.00
    Relatively complex biotechnology/chemical case = $4,448.00
    Relatively complex electrical/computer case = $3,910.00
Relatively complex mechanical case is = $3,506.00

Welcome and Good luck.  That information was also presented in our seminar two months ago so I'm quite sure that the information I got is fairly accurate. Now, I realize how costly it is to patent your work.
