How to persue an invention and idea to company
« on: September 08, 2015, 12:10:46 PM »
Hello,

My name is Danielle. I came up with an idea that pertains towards to the Scrub Daddy sponge. As of now, it's only an idea and drawings of the idea. Read all about patents and not sure how to persue this idea. I take it as a shot in the dark but if anything don't want the idea be taken from me. I know I sound naive and don't have enough to start anything. That's why I thought maybe you can help.

Thank you,

Danielle

Hi Danielle,

Sorry I don't have much experience marketing or selling inventions to companies (I am mostly a "patent guy").   In general most people would apply for a patent first to try and maintain some level of control or protection on their idea and then next try to pitch or sell your idea to the company that makes the sponge to see if they would be willing to buy or license your patent application from you.   Good luck!

Also, be very careful about working with any company that wants to charge you money to help you sell or license your invention.  Many of these companies are scams and event the ones that are legit have a very low success record and make most of their money from inventors like you paying them.

Dear Brad
I recently, called one of the patent company agent and told them I have new idea sport exercising equipment, we sign contract before revealing the idea, and they told me during 24 hours we give you answer if we accept follow with your idea, next the manager called me and told me its good idea 1st step we need to make the prototype drawing, send us 400 dollars to start, I did, and the drawing is ready now. next step is to license provisional patent and show it to investors, he is asking me 4500 dollars to do that.
Please advise

Brad

Please ask them exactly what the $4,500 will get you.   Ask for a list of things they will do for your $4,500.  Ask them if there is a refund if they are not able to license your idea.   Ask them how many products they have tried to license and how many they have actually licensed.  My guess is less than 1% of all their projects every get licensed so they make most of their money by charging people like you $4,500.

Thank you Mr. Brad for the valuable reply :)
but the strange thing why they can not license only 1 % ?
is it that difficult? or the patent is already been invented by someone else before ?
do you think I can sell the idea without licensing the patent ?
Regards

It is very hard to license an idea without a patent.  I don't know of any examples where this has been done before but there are probably a few out there.  Sorry I don't have any good advice in this area.
