Big companies and my idea

Big companies and my idea
« on: November 20, 2014, 09:27:03 PM »
HI Brad
I am putting together a PPA and the potential licencees are very big multi-national companies. The quesiton I have is that my invention is a software solution for the industry I work in. I propose to contact these big companies once my PPA is submitted. Can these big companies take one quick look at my idea then make a minor tweak or make a small change that wasn't mentioned in the PPA and claim it as theirs? If they did this I would be powerless to do anything as they are massive and I am 'nothing' and going legal would be impossible. How can I 'cover' everything in my PPA?
Thanks Jane

Brad

Hi Jane,

The secret is to not cover "everything" but rather cover only the top 2-5 essential pieces to make your idea work.  That way your patent can hopefully block them from adding in new things because you have protected the essential steps.

For example, if I had a patent on a bicycle and my patent covered two wheels, a frame, a seat, and handlebars.   If someone else wanted to come in and make a bike that had all of my features plus brakes, they could not make that because my patent covers the essential pieces so their bike that has all of my features would be in violation of my patent.
